Black and White Film Developing by Mail

Black and white film developing is handled differently than color at our lab, and that difference is exactly why photographers choose us for it. We process black and white film across every format we offer, 35mm, 120 medium format, and disposable cameras, using the same hand processing approach across all of them rather than running it through an automated color line. Whether you are shooting Tri-X, HP5, or an expired roll that has been sitting for years, our film developing process is built to handle the specific chemistry black and white requires.

Choose develop only if you just want your negatives processed, add scanning for downloadable digital files, or add physical prints if you want hard copies in hand.

  • Processing Time

Black and white film is hand processed rather than run through automated lines, which is why turnaround runs 1 to 5 business days across every format. This hand processing approach gives our lab technicians direct control over development time, agitation, and chemistry temperature for each individual roll, a level of care automated color processing lines cannot replicate. This is different from our Color C41 film developing turnaround, which runs 1 to 3 business days since it moves through automated equipment.

Push and pull processing is available for black and white film only, in 1, 2, or 3 stop increments. Select the push/pull option when ordering and specify the stops in your order notes. Additional fees apply. This option is not available for Color C41 film.

FAQ

Why does black and white take longer than color?

Black and white film is hand processed individually rather than run through automated equipment the way Color C41 is, which gives our technicians precise control over each roll but takes more time, typically 1 to 5 business days compared to 1 to 3 for color.

Can you push or pull my black and white film?

Yes. Push and pull processing is available in 1, 2, or 3 stop increments for black and white film. Select the option at checkout and note the stops in your order instructions. This is not available for color film.

Does black and white developing cost the same as color?

No. Black and white film developing costs $6 more than Color C41 at every format, due to the additional time required to hand process each roll individually rather than run it through automated equipment.

Do you develop expired black and white film?

Yes. Expired black and white film often still produces strong results, though it may show increased grain, reduced contrast, or fog depending on age and storage conditions.

Can you develop black and white film in any format?

Yes. We process black and white in 35mm, 120 medium format, and disposable cameras, all using the same hand processing approach.
